Viva Las Vegas Sportscar Up For Sale

Hundreds of collector cars will be on auction this week in Las Vegas, but none is generating more buzz than the 1961 Ol' Yaller VIII sports car that Elvis Presley drove in the movie "Viva Las Vegas."

The car — Lot No. 709 — will be sold to the highest bidder at the 2nd annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction being conducted through Saturday at Mandalay Bay.

Craig Jackson, the auction company's chairman and CEO, said the owner of the car chose to sell it at the Las Vegas auction specifically because of its link to the movie. "Hopefully, someone will want it to stay in Vegas," Jackson said.

Elvis Is an Oldie But Goodie
by Martha Hirsch
Champaign-Urbana Courier
October 23, 1976

An Elvis Presley concert is a boon to flashcube manufacturers in America. The sellout crowd at the Assembly Hall Friday night might used thousands of flashes in an effort to capture each creaky twitch of aging idol of early rock and roll. Elvis, although he can't quite boogy with his thickening waist, nonetheless deserved the screaming adulation for his showmanship alone. Time may not have made him sexier, but it taught him how to sell it and how to make his buyers love it even at a scalper's price of $25 for $12.50 tickets.

His band was dressed in red sequined leisure suits. He brought 10 backup vocalists and a flunky with a unique function - which will be revealed in a few paragraphs. And Elvis Presley audience included people from all walks of concertgoing. Some of them looked like leftovers from a Jefferson Starship show. Others probably would have been equally comfortable with Lawrence Welk. There were number of families with children, a few middle-aged ladies with Elvis' name sequined on their T-shirts and a good portion of well-suited gentlemen who looked like stereotyped bank officers. Naturally, there were pretty young girls there, too. They stood in front of the stage and absolutely died whenever Elvis decided to slay them.

The band set up and turned up matter-of-factly during as intermission, which followed the warmup acts. Then an announcer came on and urged everyone to return to their seats "as quickly as possible so that Elvis can come on." Thousands scurried while those already seated laughed a little self-consciously at their eagerness. In darkness, the band began with the strains of Wagner's "Thus Spake Zarathustra," also known as the theme from the movie "2001." They squeezed out one phrase and -flash! - a colored spot illuminated some band member. It wasn't Elvis, yet.

Another few bars and - flash - another colored spot on the stage. Still not Elvis, and Lord how the tension mounted. When the white spot hit the doorway and Elvis himself sauntered out the crowd went predictably crazy and millions of watts in flashcubes winked in rapid succession, lighting the hall to its concrete rafters. He was dressed in a tight, white shiny suit with a sequined design on his back and legs. His shirt was opened at the neck, but his chest was not hairy. (Don't you want every detail?) He wore a heavy belt with a massive buckle, which was designed, one suspects, to disguise his somewhat fleshy belly. Yes its' true: Elvis is not exactly trim. However, those who sat behind the stage can testify that Elvis' rear still holds altogether.

With an acoustic guitar hanging from his neck as a prop, Elvis launched into his first numbers. He sang Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender and sounded like old times. Then the flunky swung into action. Elvis sang and inclined his head to this man in red, and the man draped a long white scarf around the king's neck. Then Elvis strolled to the edge of the stage and, mopping at a real or imagined drop of perspiration with the long, white scarf, he pulled it from his neck and dropped it into the hand of one of the girls at the edge of the stage. Then he inclined his head for another scarf and repeated the act - many times.

The young women who were thus favored frequently did little dances of sheer transported delight at receiving Elvis' personally sweated-upon scarf. A couple times - are you ready for this - Elvis dipped to one knee and kissed a waiting young woman. And when that happened, a grandmotherly voice cried out in a fit of jealous desire: "Those young things can't appreciate you."

Also new in the house was Scatter, a chimpanzee. Elvis got the chimp from Captain Bill Killebrew. The monkey was trained to "drive a car" . Elvis and the guys really enjoyed the things the chimp did, unlike some of the girls around.
October 21, 1965
Bill Black died four months after receiving surgery to remove a brain tumor and Elvis was quoted in the Commercial Appeal as saying that Bill " was a great man and a person that everyone loved. This comes as such a shock to me that I can hardly explain how much I loved Bill".
Elvis didn't attend the funeral, as he was afraid of causing disruption.

Elvis stayed in a special wing of Dr. Ghanem's home, for celebrity patients. Elvis had to go through a new "sleep diet", consisted of liquid nourishment and sedated rest.
October 21, 1975
Elvis had contractual commitments to RCA and the Colonel had come up with several ideas to fulfill these.
A collection of movie title tracks, an album especially for children and so forth. RCA had not yet responded to any of his suggestions, so now the Colonel went to RCA with a telegram from Elvis:
" I would like to work on an album for early '76 release, where I would do a combination, part conventional and part live from Las Vegas, during my Dec. 2-15 engagement. This would give a much better flavor with all the new material. Best regards, Elvis"

Nothing came from this suggestion.
After a stay of almost 3 months in a veterinary hospital in West Boston, Elvis' chow returned home.

Old (Well, a Little) Swivel Hips Hits Town - Ooooooooh, It's Elvis
by James Stommen
Kalamazoo Gazette
October 22, 1976

Let there be no doubt: Elvis is a heavyweight in the entertainment field. And for most of an overflow crowd at Kalamazoo's Wings Stadium Thursday night, that old (well, all right, just middle-aged) Presley magic made what they had gone through to see him well worth the effort. The 41-year-old entertainer rocked his way through an hour-long performance that left many of his fans of all ages breathless at best, and total drained of emotion in more than a few cases. Along the way, Elvis demonstrated that:

1) He has tremendous personal impact, despite the fact that he hasn't had what one could call a real hit in some time.

2) The Presley voice, while perhaps not encompassing the extreme range it once did, still has plenty of "ooomph".

3) The years (and pounds) are catching up to him. Not that many people seemed to care. Those fans who as teens 20 years ago used to joke about "middle-age spread" now prefer to think of it as "not getting older, just getting better."

Wings stadium officials said today the concert, which attracted nearly 8000 persons, grossed some $85,000. That would make it the biggest dollar-volume show in Kalamazoo history, narrowly topping the $84,000 total take for Frank Sinatra's appearance at the stadium last May. Tickets for the Presley performance were pegged at $10.25 and $12.75, the latter figure topping (by 25 cents) the top Sinatra ticket price, a previous record for an entertainment event here.

While the overall impression of last night's performance is one of overwhelming positive audience reaction ("pass the Alka-Seltzer, Ma, they're screaming again"), there were some aspects of negative response. For one thing, many of those in the stadium audience of middle age or older were getting their first exposure to the stadium concert scene. And if you haven't experienced the near-hysteria that surrounds top rock stars, the noise levels from both directions - performer and audience - can be overwhelming. Add to that the fact that the vision of a goodly share of those persons in 50 rows of floor-level seats was obscured by the more fanatic fans who chose to stand during much of the performance, and more than a little negative feeling can be experienced.

Let it be noted that there are extreme differences of opinion as to how good or bad a performance is (indeed, as this is being written, fellow staffers ranging in age from early 20s to early 60s are debating the issue). Suffice it to say that those who were Elvis fans prior to last night's concert thought it to range anywhere from good to terrific, and that those who were lukewarm at best probably didn't have their opinions changed by the performance.

After the usual array of warm-up acts ("When are they bringing out the dancing dogs and jugglers?" grumped one patron), word of a half-hour intermission led to an audible groan from an audience keyed up for the appearance of he who was once known as Elvis the Pelvis. But after lights had dimmed again and backup musicians heralded the star's approach with a rendition of "2001: A Space Odyssey," Presley padded on-stage to tumultuous applause and a wave of flashbulbs going off.

Opening with a drawn-out version of C.C. Ryder, Elvis cast what passed for sexy sidelong glances, pausing once to glance back over his shoulder at those in seats behind the stage. His mimicking falsetto cry of "Turn around" touched on the problem of satisfying those on all sides who wanted a view of The Man. Shifting (in more ways than one) into I've Got a Woman, Elvis showed some of the moves that once earned him the reference "Swivel Hips."

He made a quick reference to the problems he encountered at Pontiac Stadium last New Year's Eve, when the suit he had been poured into couldn't stand the strain of excess poundage, splitting the seat while Elvis was gyrating. "As long as this suit holds up, we'll be all right," he noted. Highlighting the evening for many fans were the excursions Elvis took to the front, back and corners of the stage, bestowing white or blue towels on lucky ones in the audience. Charlie Hodges, who sings harmony, has the even more important job of following Elvis around the stage, supplying him with fresh towels to bless with perspiration before tossing them to the wolves below.

Biggest audience response was saved for a stirring rendition of America the Beautiful, belted out in the latter portion of the program (it really should have been the closing number; that was its impact). Major reaction came to such long-ago hits as Jailhouse Rock, Chains of Love and a medley that included All Shook Up, Teddy Bear and Don't Be Cruel. He didn't sing Heartbreak Hotel which was his first big hit back in 1956, nor were such all-time hits as Blue Suede Shoes and Love Me Tender included in the Elvis repertoire, though some members of the audience shouted out the names of those past favorites. All of the members of the backup singing and instrumental groups got their moment in the spotlight, as well, including recognition of warm-up groups, the Sweet Inspirations and the Stamps Quartet, a lively Gospel singing group. The end came quickly when, after singing Can't Help Falling in Love, Elvis stepped to stage's edge for a few quick handshakes, then was whisked away by bodyguards.

And a crowd that numbered nearly 8000 persons began the slow journey out of the stadium and its surrounding parking lots. For those who were fanatical about the onetime King of Rock and Roll, the statement made by one early 20s woman to another may have summed up the entire evening: "You TOUCHED his LEG? Ooooooooooh!"

ON THIS DAY IN ELVIS HISTORY October 20

There was a note in the Press - Scimitar, stating that Elvis was on the Louisiana Hayride, although Elvis' contract with the Hayride had not been finalized yet.
Elvis did two shows on this day. First he appeared at the Brooklyn High School Auditorium, Cleveland at 1.30 p.m. This show was put together by Bill Randle, the DJ from of Cleveland. According to Randle there was made a film of this appearance but the footage has never been located.
The second gig that day was at St. Michael's Hall, Cleveland at 8.00 p.m.
Again hosted by Randle and according to him the show was a real success. Elvis broke the strings of his guitar and even smashed it on the floor, while the audience went wild. There was even police assistance to get Elvis out of the hall.

Gladys and Vernon Presley signed a telegram provided by Tom Diskin granting Colonel Parker "sole and exclusive" representation of their son.
At the Schwartz and Ableser Jewelry Elvis signed for 2 diamond rings and 10 more TCB pendants.
Elvis performed at the Notre Dame University Athletic and Convention Center, South Bed, Indiana.

The Power And Magic Remain
by Joe Raymond
South Bend Tribune
October 21, 1976

I have to admit I was impressed. So, of course, were 12000 others who filled the Athletic and Convocation Center front to back to see Elvis Presley, the rock and roll king, sing, wriggle and roll. It takes an amazing power to take an auditorium of seemingly perfectly normal women in their mid-30s and take them back to 1960 and transform them into a screaming throng begging for one of the baby-blue towels or a chance to kiss or hug this superstar. For Presley, the power has never left.

His style varies little from the early days, but the world has changed and so has Presley. He now sports a longer hair style with lengthy sideburns and a paunchy frame on his body. He also has a fantastic voice for a rock and roll singer in his 40s. But it's the look that does it all; that sheepish, devilish grin and then a wink that drives the audience to screams and sets the Instamatics flashing.

Presley is backed up by a seven-piece horn section, three vocal groups - including soul singers the Sweet Inspirations - and a fine group of musicians, featuring the talents of David Briggs, songwriter and electric pianist. Warmed up by three acts, the Stamps, comedian Jackie Kahane and the Sweet Inspirations, it wasn't until close to 10 PM before the slinky Presley wiggled onto the stage. Opening on an upbeat with a country and western tune C.C. Ryder, Elvis set the stage for a variety of music that was to come.

Singing rock tunes like Jailhouse Rock, Teddy Bear, Johnny B. Goode, All Shook Up, What'd I Say and Hound Dog Presley recalled the earthy era of the 50s and 60s. Changing pace in between, Elvis fired up the audience as hot as his fireburst outfit with country and western and blues tunes like Steamroller Baby, Fever and If You Love Me Let Me Know.

In between all this singing, Presley was handing out those baby-blue towels faster than his second, Charlie Hodges, could put them around his sweat-soaked neck. For those who got one, it was the thrill of a lifetime. Debbie Slater of Mishawaka caught one in the middle of the show, musch to the delight of her screaming girlfriends. "I'll save it forever," she swooned. "I have to keep it from my sister so she won't take it. I've watched him in his old movies, and by pushing my way up to the front, I got the towel." It's that magic feeling that makes Presley a success and the magic hasn't left. Not yet at least...
