Elvis performed at the Louisiana Hayride, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport.
Scotty, Bill and Elvis are forced to cover other artists, since they only had 2 singles out of their own. So this night Fool Fool Fool, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry and Sittin' On The Top Of The World were sung in this show. In the same show Slim Whitman, Jim Reeves, Jim Ed and Maxine Brown performed their thing.
Since Elvis was still underage Vernon And Gladys had to sign for another contract running for one year. Elvis would get $18 per show and Scotty and Bill $12 each.

Elvis performed twice at the Biloxi Community House, Biloxi, Mississippi. Once at 2.00 and once at 8.00 p.m. to benefit the Daily Herald Doll & Toy Fund.

November 06, 1960

Finally Elvis had persuaded Alan Fortas to rejoin the group and they all flew to Los Angeles to start with the preproduction of Wild In The Country.

Elvis was joined by Priscilla at the MGM Studios. Priscilla had read the reports in the press about Elvis and Ann-Margret: they were spotted riding motorcycles together.

Elvis performed at the Cleveland Public Hall Auditorium, Cleveland, Ohio at 2.30 and 8.30 p.m. This was the first time that Al Dvorin took over as announcer. He would say at the end of each show the now famous words: Elvis Has Left The Building.

Elvis played his usual winter gig for the International during February. Then in July he did his first two-week engagement in Lake Tahoe. It was a tired Elvis who roled into the newly re-named Hilton hotel for his summer engagement. For the most part Elvis was at his worst since his return to the concert stage. He was still a lot better than he would be in later years, but compared to his last summer engagement Elvis was a mere shadow of his former self. In Tahoe Elvis was at his best, but in Vegas he brought the exact same song list and performed it on a lower level. So it was safe to say that Elvis was happy to see closing night. He would have a few months rest in between Vegas and the start of his next tour in November. There are two significant things about this closing show. The first is it would be the last time the Imperials would be backing Elvis. After a money dispute with the Colonel they would leave and J.D. Summer and the Stamps would be brought in for the upcoming tour. The second significant thing that takes place at this show is Elvis is wearing a cape for the first time, at his wife Priscilla's urging. Elvis would wear a cape on stage until the Summer engagement in 1973. The tape recording begins very clearly with the 2001 THEME. All in all this tape has pretty good sound for an audience recording. There are a few dropouts at times but it is still good. Elvis goes straight into his traditional THAT'S ALL RIGHT which sounds just like any other version from these early years. The only different sounding version from these years I've heard comes from the January 29th DS in Las Vegas. "Well...I said I Got A Woman," Elvis quickly goes into this song and just like the previous song, it's no different than any other version except AMEN is missing that familiar J.D. bass. Elvis greets his audience and then heads into PROUD MARY which is like a 1972 version of this song instead of a February 1970 version. Without a pause it's into another standard version of a song. This time it's SWEET CAROLINE. During this song the tape becomes a lot more clearer, and Elvis is much more audible. So far this concert has offered no real surprises. POLK SALAD ANNIE kicks in with Elvis saying, "Batman, I'll fly away." A definite reference to his new cape. Elvis is wearing the Black Fireworks suit this night. The arrangement of Polk Salad Annie seems to be more speeded up like the 1972 arrangement and not so much like the 1970 arrangement. Elvis finally has more than two words to say to his audience after the song and says "Good evening my names Johnny Cash. I'd like to welcome you to the International. We'll entertain you one way or another." He then ask for something to be taken off, it's kind of inaudible but I believe it's his cape. He then announces LOVE ME TENDER. The band starts it but Elvis stops it saying "we're not going to do it yet." But he starts it anyway. This is standard Love Me Tender. The scarves are starting to fly for the first time and Elvis plays a lot with his audience during this song. The song is pretty short. Next Elvis calls out "down in Louisiana" and James Burton starts a very Aloha sounding JOHHNY B. GOODE. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE is next and this is one of the first musical highlights of the show. It sounds a lot like the master but with the only real difference being in the line where Elvis says "and tomorrow could you ask me for the world," here Elvis says "oooohhh and tomorrow..." He also sings it at different key at parts and it sounds simply beautiful. I love this version. Then it's into the 50's stuff with LOVE ME, BLUE SUEDE SHOES/WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN GOIN ON, HEARTBREAK HOTEL, and TEDDY BEAR/DON'T BE CRUEL. All of these are no different than any other versions we know with plenty of scraves and teddy bears to go around. The next highlight of this show comes with a totally inpromptu version of ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT. Elvis hadn't sang this song much since 1969 and it gets a big eruption from the audience. Elvis sings this song totally serious. It sounds a lot like Hampton Roads 1972 but better and very gentile. Elvis sounds like he's about to start crying during the spoken part. This might be the best I've ever heard this song performed in concert. "You ain't nuthin but a HOUND DOG." Quickly Elvis is into a slow version of Hound Dog. There is an edit on the tape and suddenly it is the fast version. Elvis ends the song by saying "you ain't nuthin but a chicken...dog...you ain't no friend of mine." Elvis then calls for SUSPICIOUS MINDS. You can really tell Elvis is getting bored of this song here. It is nothing like the kick ass versions from 1969-70. A woman on the tape sounds like she's having an orgasm during this song. There is a lot of karate at the end. The band introductions are next and Elvis is very out of breath during them. Elvis notes during the intros that he is drinking Gatorade and that the first word for it was Panther? I might have missed something there. Elvis also mentions that guys in the service get awful homesick because they call each other mother a lot. I think I've heard this dialogue before. After the intros Elvis introduces some celebrities and does a few lines of a song called THE EASY PART IS OVER. Elvis then thanks the International and introduces his wife Priscilla. He also mentions that the musicians he has with him are the best in their fields. "I have a new record called I'M LEAVIN." This is good song and I've never heard a live version that was any different than any other. "Lawdy, Lawdy." LAWDY MISS CLAWDY is the last highlight of the evening. Elvis really gets into this one, so much that he even does a reprise of it. I have always liked the 70's version of this song. Elvis is a little inaudible before starting CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE. In his words he does say that without his audience, "it would just be one cold ass room." Can't Help Falling In Love starts but Elvis stops it. "Hold it...hold it a minute. And people ask me...when am I going to quick...why don't you retire...NO! (a woman screaming "no, never,never!") Retiring...I love it! (A little inaudible) I'll be singing till I'm dried up like a prun...and old dry prun. A...anyway." Then a standard version of Can't Help Falling In Love starts and finishes. This is a very entertaining show and one of my personal favorites. It is pretty straight forward for a closing show but there are still some must have songs and comments in here. The Way It Was at the Cleveland Public Hall by Joanne Galleta Titusville Herald November 12, 1971 I've never been really crazy about Elvis Presley. The reason for that might be that by the time I was old enough to appreciate music, Elvis had already been on the scene for about six or seven years and was becoming a movie star. I saw all of his movies and liked, but wasn't crazy about, his music. Then along came The Beatles and my hysteria and devotion was given entirely to the four Liverpool long-hairs. 1 forgot about Elvis. One thing amazed me about Elvis freaks throughout the years. They were almost always sure about themselves when they calmly told anyone present that Elvis was the king and nobody would ever replace him. "He started the whole thing," they'd say. Actually, without Elvis where would rock be today? Appeared in Cleveland Elvis appeared at the Cleveland Public Hall last Saturday for two shows. At the afternoon show he played to a full house and it was unlike anything I have ever seen before. First of all. I had never seen so many people crammed together in one building before. I could not even begin to estimate the size of the crowd, but I could safely say that there was not one vacant seat to be had and that included the balcony. Persons seated in the back of the balcony were probably able to see a tiny dot on the stage which they identified as Elvis Presley. I am rarely impressed but one could not help but be impressed by the show Mr. Presley put on. Before his appearance, the crowd was treated to the Sweet Inspirations, a trio similar to The Supremes who were good but who wanted to listen to a girls trio with Elvis lurking backstage? Muss Hysteria When the girls left the stage, hysteria gripped the crowd again and we were sure that it would be Elvis this time. Wrong again. A very amateur comedian timidly forced himself on stage and began at-allright-but-sometimes-dull act about how weird people can be. His name was Jack Something and I was glad to see him go. Once again the stage was empty and as we waited for Elvis to appear I found myself feeling sorry for the people who had to perform before him. Nobody really cared about seeing or hearing anything but Elvis at this point and they made the fact very obvious. At this time, an official masculine voice informed the audience that there would be a short intermission and that the concession stands would be open for our convenience. Up until that time, he had been informing us that the fire department had requested that there be no smoking and that if we hurried now, we could still buy a souvenir book of pictures of Elvis, or a poster of Elvis or even "opera glasses" to view Elvis if we didn't have a good sent. He also kept saying over and over that if people crowded the aisles during the show, the performance would be stopped and how's that for a threat? Police Appear As the intermission dragged on, I began to notice Cleveland cops appearing from nowhere jamming themselves near the stage trying to but looking like front of the appear calm they wished they could be somewhere busting a few potheads instead of at a silly Elvis Presley concert. Being rather intelligent, I rapidly figured out that if the cops were lining themselves up in front of the stage that Elvis would be the next guy out on stage. I guess everybody else in the auditorium was as intelligent as I am because tension reached a peak and everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats with eyes wide and a blank expression on their faces. Once again the official voice came over the public address system only this time it carried the message that everybody wanted to hear. "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Elvis Presley." Shouts, shrieks, groans, total hysteria. He calmly walked out on stage seemingly totally oblivious of the thousands screaming and yelling and trying to force their bodies to move closer to him. Thousands of Flash Bulbs Once he did appear the crowd was unbelievable. From the teeny-boppers to the matronly old woman, all that could be heard was wailing female voices shrieking undying love for Elvis. People stood on their scats to get a belter look and yours truly and her fellow travelers were not above this. We were so far gone at this time that even when the big Cleveland policemen told us to sit down we did until their backs were turned and once again we stood on our chairs like little kids at the children's matinee. Up until this time, whenever anything good would appear on stage, thousands of flash bulbs would explode taking pictures of heaven-knows-what. We decided that one fool probably thought he had seen Elvis and had taken a picture and the rest of the idiots decided that he must have seen something, so they were rapidly taking pictures of an empty stage. When he did arrive, it was though the whole building was under the influence of a giant strobe light due to the many flashbulbs exploding in rapid succession Long Black Hair He was fantastic. He was dressed in black bells with gold trim and a black shirt also with gold trim. He wore a red scar around his neck and also had a black and gold cape which was taken off by some lucky stagehand. His long black hair appeared thick and well cared for and his total self was in excellent form. He began to sing and once again it was hysteria time. People began to pour forth to the stage from nowhere and the cops began to move in to action. Their lack of tact at handling a crowd left much to be desired. One youth merely tried to shake hands with Elvis and was punched in the stomach for his efforts. The cops kept yelling, "Move back, I said move back," and the people paid absolutely no heed. They would move back more or less to keep the cop quiet but as soon as he would move elsewhere they would surge forth again. I found myself thinking of what an ego trip it would be to come on stage and have thousands of people scream and yell and almost fight each other to get your attention. Values His Life Of course he must be used to this kind of attention by now. At times he would joke with the crowd. One time he asked for someone to turn on houselights so he could look at the crowd. Maybe he was counting people at $10 a head, but I think he just wanted to see what age group was most represented. He said that he would like to come down and walk up and down the aisle but the crowd began screaming again so he quickly changed his mind. I guess he values his life. It's weird, but I can't remember the exact songs he sang. He must have been on stage for about 45 minutes and he was singing the entire time. He slopped only once when he went off to the side, drank something and wiped the perspiration from his forehead. He took the red scarf off from around his neck and gave it to a girl in the front row who must have died shortly thereafter. His voice was as powerful as it is on record and he gave his all while performing. For a 35-year-old guy, he's really got it all. He sang his oldies with a touch of sarcasm and handled newer songs with great case. He was just great. Left the Building? At the end of his performance, he smiled and said that he would see us tonight. And then he was gone as quickly as he had come. People just kind of sat there as if in shock and the official voice crammed itself into our thoughts with, "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Presley has left the building." Sure he has, we thought. He's really Superman and just flew off into the sunset. The guy must have thought we were awfully dumb to believe that in a matter of five seconds Elvis could have escaped the Cleveland Public Hall. We all knew he was still in the building and we all knew that we wanted to see him and tell him how great he was. But there were those Cleveland cops and what could they do if we all decided to tear the place down and demand to see Elvis? Probably use tear gas or worse. So we abandoned the idea of running up the stairs and finding Elvis alone in his room probably sipping a drink and waiting for his dinner before his next performance. Still The King There is feeling of being let down that follows anything good and we all experienced that feeling as we trooped back to the bus station. One out of three people at the bus station had been present at the concert and were still in state, of semi-hysteria. We all boarded the bus and at times we found ourselves wondering what Elvis was doing now. Well it's all over now and liked what I saw. I'm not about to run out and buy every Elvis record I've missed over the years, but I do know one thing and that is that he picked up another fan in Cleveland. Elvis Is Back Like A Black Tornado By Jane Scott Plain Dealer November 7, 1971 The lights went down. The music began to build up. "I can't stand it," cried a middle-aged mama in the front row of Public Hall yesterday afternoon. And suddenly Elvis Presley was there, like a black tornado. He whirled on stage in a black jumpsuit threaded with gold and a red-lined cape, grabbed a guitar from a backup man and started singing the song that started it all 17 years ago, "That's All Right." It sure was. Sixteen songs and 60 minutes later the man who put the roll into the rock, the man who has sold more records than anyone in the history of recorded sound, was still the king. "ALL RIGHT? HE'S BETTER than ever!" cried Mrs. Richard C. Wood of Akron, who was just eight when Presley first hit. Presley's hair was blacker and longer, the duck-tail gone. His face was paler, and had the start of a double chin under the long jawline. He's 36. But a new note had been added. A humorous touch, a light hearted spoofing of his whole rhythm role. Suddenly, in the midst of his "Heartbreak Hotel" he substituted the word "sweaty" for "lonely" in "I'm so longly I could die." Then he wiped his brow with his red scarf and tossed it downstage. He introduced the superb J. D. Sumner Stamp Quartet, pointed to the 18-member group playing behind him and said, "The orchestra is the Cleveland Browns." SCREAMS FOLLOWED AS he sauntered to left stage, then suddenly shifted to the right and stooped to kiss a crippled child held up on stage. "I wanna come out there to you, but he won't let me," Presley teased, pointing his right hand with rings sparkling at three fingers at a hefty policeman. Almost 10,000 women signed in unison The hall was packed, a sellout both shows, and cries reached the rafters at times. But they were more from 30-40 year old women than turned on teens. Practically the only black people there were ushers. Presley scored with his golden oldies - "Love Me Tender," "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," "Can't Help Falling In Love" "Hound Dog," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Blue Hawaii," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy." And then came the highlight, the newer "Bridge Over Troubled Water," a beautiful, poignant thing. The Sweet Inspirations, who had led off the show, joined in, and for a few golden moments all generations were bridged. THE SUGGESTIVE SHAKING that labeled him as "Elvis the Pelvis" and made Ed Sullivan show him only from the waist up on TV, was still there. He jerked his left leg, he pointed his guitar like a machine gun, he vibrated like a gong. Even grandmas screamed, but somehow I felt it was a little dated and maybe as carnal as cornflakes. Comedian Jackie Kuhane got a surprisingly big hand, considering everyone was waiting for Elvis. His talk about middle-aggers in orthopedic hot pants hit home. Only minority reports heard by this reporter came from Miss Ulstine Ulis of Mentor who felt that Presley's black outfit was too hard to see from back in the hall and from Plain Dealer photographer Robert E.
